Not Sure What Kind of Foundation to Use on Your New Home?
When you are undecided about what kind of house foundation construction to get, try reading the following guidelines that will help you to make a more informed decision.
Basement: Full and Daylight
A full basement foundation is said to be the deepest of all the foundation types. A full basement will generally match most if not all of the floor space on the level above, and it is usually approximately 6 feet high. Newer homes, however, have taller basements in order for them to be made into another living space. The main advantage of a full basement is the extra space it gives you. In some homes, finishing a basement will often double a home’s living space. A full basement can be conditioned, meaning heated or cooled just like the rest of the house, or unconditioned.
Crawlspace
These consist of short foundation walls that will stand on footings. The walls are often very short, thus creating a space that you will literally have to crawl under, or they can be 4 feet tall, providing room for storage and sometimes a furnace. Typically, crawlspaces are unheated and are ventilated with small vents that will penetrate the foundation walls to create a small amount of airflow.
Concrete Slab-On-Grade
This is a solid concrete slab that sits on the ground. Slab-on-grade foundations are frequently used in climates that do not receive ground freezing and thawing, as it can result in cracks in the concrete and the foundation shifting. This type of foundation is said to be the cheapest and does offer more protection against the likes of termite infestation, and is commonly seen in warmer climates.
